About this artwork

Marcel Dzama – Midnights Moon Light

Marcel Dzama’s Midnights Moon Light (2023) is a signed limited edition lithograph on Velin d’Arches paper measuring 100 × 68 cm. A luminous moon hovers above a dark, rippling sea, while beneath the surface a cast of swimmers, fish, and seahorses unfolds in a densely imagined underwater tableau.

Rendered in Dzama’s characteristic palette of inky blacks and deep blues, the artwork's composition blends folklore, fantasy, and subtle unease. The watchful moon and star-studded sky introduce a theatrical, almost stage-like atmosphere, while the submerged figures evoke themes of transformation, vulnerability, and dream logic. As in much of Dzama’s work, narrative remains open-ended, inviting the viewer into a poetic world that oscillates between innocence and quiet tension.

Published in 2023 in a limited edition of 70 plus 7 artist’s proofs, this fine art print is hand-signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, representing a striking example of Dzama’s contemporary print practice.

About Marcel Dzama

Marcel Dzama is a Canadian artist renowned for his distinctive style, which features whimsical, often unsettling figures within sparse, dream-like settings. Born in 1974 in Winnipeg, Canada, Dzama’s artwork is characterized by a muted palette primarily consisting of browns, greens, and reds, which lends a timeless quality to his pieces and evokes a sense of nostalgia. His artwork draws heavily on a range of influences, from Dada and Surrealist movements to childhood folk tales and political allegories, creating a unique visual language that is both enigmatic and accessible.

Dzama is particularly known for his prolific output in drawing, but he has also made significant contributions to the fields of sculpture, painting, film, and printmaking. His prints, including lithographs, etchings and archival pigment prints, showcase his expertise in the medium, featuring the same intricate detailing and surreal quality found in his other artworks. These limited edition prints often explore complex narratives, blending human figures with animals and mythical creatures in bizarre, narrative-driven scenarios. The use of printmaking allows Dzama to delve deeper into his creative process, experimenting with different techniques and materials to enhance the textural and visual depth of his work.
