Artwork details
JR's Giants, Kikito is a signed limited edition lithograph from 2020, documenting the artist's large-scale photographic installation realized in Tecate, Mexico, in 2017. The artwork shows a monumental image of a young boy, known as Kikito, leaning over the US–Mexico border wall, his gaze directed toward the United States. Installed on the Mexican side of the border, the original project was part of JR's Giants series, which uses oversized photographic portraits to introduce human presence into politically charged landscapes. By placing a child's image at the site of a fortified boundary, the fine art print addresses themes of migration, surveillance, and geopolitical division while foregrounding innocence and curiosity.
Published in 2020 in a limited edition, Giants, Kikito is hand-signed and numbered by the artist, preserving the scale, symbolism, and documentary nature of JR's socially engaged public intervention.
About this artist
JR (French, b. 1983) is an internationally recognized contemporary artist known for his large-scale photographic works, public interventions, and limited edition prints. Emerging from the Paris street art scene in the early 2000s, JR has developed a distinctive practice that merges photography, urban art, and social engagement. His work is widely associated with the evolution of street art into the institutional art world, alongside figures such as Banksy, Invader, and Shepard Fairey.
JR’s artworks are characterized by monumental black-and-white photographic images that are installed directly within public and natural environments. These interventions are rigorously composed and documented, forming the basis for signed lithographs, fine art prints, and editioned artworks that translate his public projects into collectible formats. His limited edition prints retain the conceptual and visual impact of the original installations while offering collectors access to his practice through museum-quality production.
Central to JR’s work is the use of photography as a tool for visibility and dialogue. By enlarging portraits and integrating them into their surrounding landscapes, he challenges traditional distinctions between subject and setting, image and architecture. This approach extends seamlessly into his printmaking, where scale, perspective, and illusion remain central concerns.
JR’s signed prints and artworks are held in major institutional collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Brooklyn Museum; Château La Coste, Aix-en-Provence; and Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne. His fine art prints are valued for their conceptual rigor, strong visual presence, and direct connection to landmark public projects, positioning them as important examples of contemporary photographic and urban art editions.
