JR

JR artworks

JR works with photography at architectural scale to interrogate visibility, power, and public space. Images are installed directly onto cities. Portraiture becomes intervention. Participation replaces authorship. JR prints and editions translate these projects into collectible form. The signed lithographs function as records of socially engaged actions and extend an inquiry into representation, community, and the politics of looking, realized as limited editions available for sale to collectors.

JR Biography

JR, a pseudonymous French artist born in 1983 in Paris, is a seminal figure at the nexus of photography, filmmaking, and social engagement. Recognized alongside influential street artists such as Banksy, Invader, and Shepard Fairey, JR is renowned for large-scale urban interventions and monumental photographic collages that transform public spaces into arenas of visibility for overlooked communities.

JR’s approach to street art and photography is deeply intertwined with social activism. By installing massive black-and-white portraits across varied urban landscapes—from the favelas in Brazil to the US-Mexican border and cities across Europe—he highlights the faces and stories of people who are often ignored, making the invisible visible. Over the past two decades, JR has realized numerous site-specific projects globally, working directly with local communities to create participatory artworks rooted in place and identity.

Alongside these public installations, JR prints, lithographs, and limited editions translate his projects into collectible artworks. These signed photographic prints function both as documentation and as autonomous artworks, allowing collectors to engage with the artist’s socially engaged practice beyond the original site-specific interventions.

Through his innovative use of photography, architecture, and public participation, JR continues to expand the possibilities of contemporary art. His projects blur the boundaries between street art, documentary photography, and conceptual practice, establishing him as one of the most influential artists working in public space today.
