Imi Knoebel (born 1940 in Dessau, Germany) is a central figure in postwar minimalist and abstract art, renowned for his rigorous exploration of form, color, and material. Although he studied under Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Knoebel’s artistic philosophy aligns more closely with the legacy of Kazimir Malevich, particularly the pursuit of “pure perception” through geometric abstraction.
Working across painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and installation, Knoebel develops a reductive visual language built from simple forms and carefully calibrated color relationships. His artworks resist narrative or symbolic interpretation, instead asserting their autonomy through presence and material clarity.
