Günther Uecker – Splitter

Günther Uecker’s Splitter (1991) is a signed limited edition lithograph on wove paper measuring 30 × 42 cm. The abstract composition presents four vertically aligned, darkened forms densely marked with nail-like impressions, their surfaces layered with smoky tonal gradations and tactile textures. The repeated silhouettes evoke both tree trunks and wounded bodies, transforming simple shapes into charged fields of impact.

A central figure of the ZERO movement, Uecker is renowned for using nails to create vibrating surfaces shaped by light and shadow. In Splitter, this signature language is translated into printmaking. The splintered imagery suggests fragmentation, violence, and renewal, themes that recur throughout his postwar practice.

Executed in 1991 in an edition of 200, this fine art print is hand-signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, representing a striking example of Uecker’s graphic interpretation of his iconic nail works.

Günther Uecker, a distinguished German sculptor, painter, printmaker and op artist, is renowned for his innovative use of nails as a primary medium. Born in 1930 in Wendorf, he developed a signature technique of meticulously hammering nails into various substrates, a process he considers a meditative ritual influenced by Eastern philosophies. Through this approach, Uecker transforms everyday objects such as furniture, musical instruments and household items into tactile artworks that push beyond the limits of two-dimensional art toward sculptural and graphical explorations of form and shadow.

As a founding member of the ZERO group, alongside Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, Uecker helped shape a new direction for post-war art in Europe. The movement emerged as a counter-response to the emotionally charged German Art Informel, promoting a clean slate for artistic creation with unconventional materials and techniques. ZERO’s focus on purity, light and kinetic energy became central to Uecker’s own philosophy. His works often rely on the interplay of light and shadow, with strategic lighting creating shifting patterns that heighten the viewer’s perception. His often-cited call to “assert yourself first” reflects his belief in artistic independence and innovation.

Throughout his career, Uecker’s sculptures, paintings and limited edition prints have been exhibited in major institutions worldwide. Key exhibitions include documenta in Kassel (1964, 1968 and 1977), the Venice Biennale (1970), Kunsthalle Bern (1966), Moderna Museet in Stockholm (1971), Nationalgalerie in Berlin (1982), mumok in Vienna (1992), Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro (1996), Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts (2012), and Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf (2015).
