Günther Uecker (born 1930) is a seminal German sculptor, painter, and printmaker, best known for his radical and iconic use of nails as an artistic medium. By rhythmically hammering thousands of nails into canvas, wood, and everyday objects, Uecker transforms simple materials into dynamic reliefs that activate light, shadow, and space. He has often described this repetitive process as meditative, influenced by Eastern philosophies and a desire to transcend traditional pictorial boundaries.
As a founding member of the ZERO group, alongside Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, Uecker played a decisive role in redefining post-war European art. ZERO emerged as a response to the emotional intensity of Art Informel, advocating a new artistic beginning grounded in light, movement, and non-traditional materials. Within this context, Uecker's nail works embody ZERO's pursuit of perceptual intensity and material clarity, with shifting illumination producing ever-changing visual effects.
