Daniel Buren (French, born 1938) is a leading conceptual artist internationally recognized for his systematic use of vertical stripes and his critical engagement with architecture and exhibition contexts. Since the 1960s, Buren has employed alternating colored and white stripes as a visual tool to question perception, authorship, and the institutional framing of art.
Central to his practice are in situ artworks, conceived specifically for their architectural or public settings, where his striped motifs interact directly with space, light, and movement. By intervening in museums, urban environments, and non-traditional venues, Buren challenges conventional modes of display and highlights the social, political, and cultural conditions that shape how art is experienced.
Alongside his large-scale installations, Daniel Buren has produced signed limited edition prints and fine art multiples that extend his conceptual approach into collectible formats. His installations and prints have been exhibited at major institutions worldwide, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), Musée National d'Art Moderne (Paris), Kunsthaus Bregenz, and Städtisches Museum Mönchengladbach. His auction record stands at $2.2 million (Christie's, New York, 2019).
