About this artwork

Candida Höfer – Jenisch-Haus Hamburg

Jenisch-Haus Hamburg (2000) is a diptych of two hand-signed, titled, numbered, and dated C-prints on photo paper, each 40 x 30 cm, from an edition of 20.

One photograph shows a formal period room in the Jenisch-Haus, an 1830s neoclassical villa in Hamburg's Jenischpark now run as a museum of Empire and Biedermeier interiors: a portrait, matched stools, and an oriental rug arranged with museological precision on parquet. The other shows the building's unrestored back rooms — exposed beams, bare stone floor, stacked old televisions, and salvaged chandeliers hung incongruously from the ceiling — the disorder that the display conceals.

Paired, the two images extend Höfer's recurring interest in institutional space, this time turning the camera on the seam between a museum's public face and its working interior.

About Candida Höfer

Candida Höfer is a renowned German photographer celebrated for her large-format architectural prints that capture the essence of public spaces. A former student of Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Höfer developed a distinctive artistic vision focused on libraries, museums, opera houses, and other institutional interiors. Since the 1980s, Höfer's photographic artwork has explored the relationship between architecture and human absence, creating powerful visual narratives about cultural spaces. Her limited edition prints are characterized by precise symmetry, natural lighting, and an almost meditative stillness that invites viewers to consider the social and historical significance of these environments. Each signed photograph in her body of work demonstrates her masterful technical skill and conceptual depth.
