Rainer is best known for his development of overpainting, a technique involving the partial or complete reworking of existing artworks, including prints and photographs by other artists, which he transforms with thick, impasto gestures and bold marks. Through his overpaintings, Rainer explores themes of "the extinction of expression, permanent covering, and contemplative tranquility," challenging conventional boundaries of artistic ownership and creation.
