About this artwork

Thomas Demand - Five Drafts (Simulator)

Thomas Demand’s Five Drafts (Simulator) is a complete suite of five digital pigment prints on photo rag paper, each measuring 28 × 28 cm (32.5 × 32.5 cm framed). The photographs depict cardboard models in various stages of assembly, reflecting the artist’s process-driven practice of building and photographing ephemeral paper constructions. From an edition of 60 plus proofs, one sheet in this set is signed, dated, and annotated “BAT” (bon à tirer), with the remaining prints marked “ok” in pencil.

In the signed edition Five Drafts (Simulator), Thomas Demand offers a rare glimpse into the provisional stages of his meticulously constructed paper models. Rather than presenting the polished, illusionistic environments for which he is best known, this contemporary photography suite foregrounds the studio process itself, revealing scissors, cardboard fragments, and geometric forms as building blocks of his staged realities. By documenting these drafts, Demand emphasizes the labor and artifice behind his artworks, underscoring his interest in how photography mediates perception and truth.

About Thomas Demand

Thomas Demand is a renowned German artist celebrated for a distinctive practice that merges sculpture and photography. His artworks are internationally recognized for transforming meticulously constructed paper sculptures into large-scale, illusionistic photographs. These photographs stand as the sole surviving artworks, as the original models are intentionally destroyed after being photographed.

Originally trained as a sculptor, Demand developed a unique process centered on crafting highly detailed models from paper and cardboard. These temporary constructions are created exclusively for the photographic act, reinforcing the photograph as the final and enduring artwork. As a result, his photographs function simultaneously as documents, sculptures, and conceptual statements, blurring boundaries between reality and fabrication.

Demand’s artworks often draw from media imagery depicting politically and historically significant locations. He reconstructs interiors associated with collective memory, such as government buildings or sites linked to pivotal historical events. Though these scenes appear familiar, their subtle imperfections reveal their artificial nature. The absence of people heightens the tension, leaving behind traces of human presence that evoke memory, power, and historical weight.

The resulting photographs challenge conventional ideas of photographic truth. By staging and reconstructing reality, Demand questions authenticity, authorship, and the reliability of images in shaping history. His signed prints and editions are highly sought after by collectors, museums, and institutions worldwide. Thomas Demand’s photographs remain among the most influential contemporary artworks, occupying a critical position within conceptual photography, limited edition prints, and contemporary art editions.
