About this artwork

Wolfgang Tillmans - Freedom from the Known

Wolfgang Tillmans' Freedom From the Known (2006) is a rare Xerox print that exemplifies his radical artistic strategy of dissolving the photographic image into abstraction through extreme enlargement. By magnifying source material to the point where individual halftone dots and raster patterns become visible graphic elements, Tillmans liberates the photograph from its documentary function, transforming it into pure materiality and visual abstraction.

Since the late 1980s, the photocopier has been central to Tillmans' artistic language. Rather than treating it as a mere reproduction device, he employs it as an independent artistic medium — embracing its mechanical imperfections, tonal shifts, and unpredictable outcomes as integral to the work's conception. The photocopier becomes a tool for questioning the nature of photographic truth itself, collapsing the distinction between original and copy, between mechanical reproduction and artistic authorship. Each print bears the traces of its technical process: subtle color variations, toner irregularities, sometimes even flaking pigment — making these works rare, unrepeatable objects despite their seemingly democratic medium.

This signed limited edition print represents Wolfgang Tillmans' deliberate refusal to hierarchize media. Xerox prints stand as equals alongside traditional photographs, magazine clippings, and posters in his practice — a conceptual stance he established as early as his groundbreaking 1993 solo exhibition. Freedom From the Known embodies this critical engagement: a work born from a machine of mass culture, yet rendered singular through the contingencies of its own process.

About Wolfgang Tillmans

Wolfgang Tillmans, a pivotal figure in contemporary photography, is known for redefining the boundaries of the medium. Rather than focusing solely on traditional photography, the German artist embraces a broad spectrum of image creation that includes still lifes, portraits, landscapes, and abstract artworks. His innovative approach extends beyond the camera as he experiments with photocopiers and photographic chemicals, exploring the material possibilities of photography while questioning the role of image-making in a visually saturated world.

Emerging in the 1990s with candid snapshot photographs that captured youth culture, LGBTQ communities, and the energy of club scenes, Tillmans has continually evolved his artistic practice. His work now spans large-scale abstract photography and editorial commissions, demonstrating both versatility and influence. Tillmans’ dedication to photography as an art form is reflected in his management of a vast and diverse body of work. As he notes, “Really, my day-to-day life in the studio … is about taking care of a quarter century’s worth of work and how it functions and operates in the outside world.”

Beyond his photographs, Tillmans has created a range of limited edition prints that are highly sought after. These photo editions exemplify his mastery of the medium as a tool for exploration and expression. Through his photographs, prints, and editions, Tillmans continues to push the conceptual and technical boundaries of photography, securing his position as a leading voice in contemporary art.
