About this artist
Shepard Fairey (born 1970, Charleston, South Carolina) is an American graphic artist, printmaker, and social activist widely regarded as a leading figure in the global Street Art movement. Working across prints, screenprints, stickers, stencils, murals, collage, and large-scale public artworks, Fairey consistently blurs the boundaries between commercial design, political propaganda, and contemporary fine art.
He first gained international attention in the early 1990s with his OBEY Giant campaign, a viral street art project featuring the face of wrestler André the Giant accompanied by the word “OBEY.” What began as a subcultural intervention rooted in skateboarding and punk aesthetics evolved into a sustained critique of authority, media manipulation, and visual persuasion. The project established Fairey’s signature graphic language: bold contrasts, limited color palettes, and references to Constructivist and propaganda poster traditions.
Shepard Fairey’s artworks and prints frequently address themes such as political corruption, environmental justice, civil rights, war, and climate change. His 2008 HOPE poster, created in support of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, became one of the most recognizable political images of the 21st century and cemented his role in contemporary visual culture.
Influenced by Pop Art, Russian Constructivism, Cuban poster design, and politically engaged music culture, Fairey’s screenprints and limited edition prints combine striking composition with direct messaging. His art has been exhibited internationally, including major retrospectives at the ICA Boston and The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh. His artworks are held in prominent public collections such as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
