Laure Prouvost is a French contemporary artist whose work spans installation, film, performance, and printmaking. Awarded the Turner Prize in 2013, she is known for constructing immersive, sensorial environments in which language, image, and narrative are deliberately destabilized. Her practice resists linear storytelling, instead unfolding through associative fragments that blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, intimacy and collective experience.
Prouvost's work frequently draws on personal memory, anecdote, and invented mythology, inviting viewers into worlds that feel at once familiar and disorienting. Through humor, linguistic play, and visual excess, she exposes the instability of meaning and questions how knowledge is formed and transmitted. Beneath this poetic surface, her artworks engage critically with urgent contemporary issues, including power structures, migration, ecological crisis, and the politics of representation.
Her films and videos are often embedded within complex installations that incorporate sculpture, found objects, furniture, signage, and architectural elements, transforming exhibitions into total environments rather than discrete displays. Limited edition prints play a significant role within this expanded practice, translating her conceptual and narrative concerns into more intimate, material forms while retaining their layered complexity.
Prouvost represented France at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019 and has presented major solo exhibitions at leading international institutions, including the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Haus der Kunst in Munich, the New Museum in New York, Tate Britain in London, and the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht. Born in 1978 in Croix-Lille, she lives and works between Antwerp and London.
