Artwork details
Hurvin Anderson's The Raft (2026) is a hand-signed and numbered eight-layer screenprint on Somerset paper, produced in an edition of 100 for Tate on the occasion of his 2026 solo exhibition at Tate Britain.
Two figures drift down a river in deep greens and blues, the rippling water echoed in the foliage above so that sky and river seem to dissolve into one continuous pattern. The scene derives from found photographs of nineteenth-century Jamaica under British colonial rule, merged with an invented early twentieth-century reminiscence, so that the courting couple on the raft claim leisure and intimacy in a landscape shaped by slavery and its abolition.
The limited edition print relates to the paintings in Rafting, the final room of the Tate Britain show, where new artworks on this theme close an exhibition spanning Hurvin Anderson's entire career.
About this artist
Hurvin Anderson (b. 1965, Birmingham) is a British painter whose artworks move between abstraction and representation, drawing on landscape, still life, and portraiture. The son of Jamaican parents who came to Britain in the 1960s, he was the youngest of eight children and the first born in the UK, and his paintings travel back and forth between England and the Caribbean. He studied at Wimbledon College of Art and received his MA from the Royal College of Art in 1998.
Anderson is best known for paintings of barbershops, parks, beaches, and hotels, social spaces through which he explores memory, belonging, and the Caribbean diaspora, often working from found photographs and recollection rather than direct observation. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2017 and elected a Royal Academician in 2023. Recent solo exhibitions include Passenger Opportunity at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (2024) and a major survey of more than 80 paintings at Tate Britain (2026). His work is held in public collections including Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Printmaking has run alongside his painting since 2009, when he began working with Durham Press in screenprint, relief, intaglio, and monotype. Anderson's prints and editions carry the same layered colour and atmosphere as his canvases, and limited editions such as The Raft (2026), made for his Tate Britain exhibition, are produced in small, hand-signed runs. MLTPL offers a selection of limited edition prints by Hurvin Anderson, each documented with edition size and medium.
