Artwork details
Fred Tomaselli’s Nov. 11, 2010 (2011) is a hand-signed screenprint and inkjet print on paper measuring 38 × 40.7 cm. Part of his ongoing New York Times series, the work appropriates and transforms the newspaper’s front page from November 11, 2010, reworking its central photograph into a kaleidoscopic, fractured explosion of color.
A self-described “news junkie,” Tomaselli began this series during the George W. Bush administration, when he started drawing and collaging directly onto his daily paper. He digitally reconstructs these interventions, merging journalism and studio practice. In this edition, a photograph of student protests in the United Kingdom—originally documenting a demonstration against tuition increases—is altered so that the shattered shop window erupts into a psychedelic mosaic. The image destabilizes the documentary authority of the press, turning reportage into a hallucinatory meditation on social unrest.
By overlaying painterly and collage-based aesthetics onto mass media imagery, Tomaselli exposes the emotional charge beneath headline language. The work reflects his broader practice of layering disparate visual fragments into dense, perceptual fields, here translated into a conceptual print that questions how images shape political memory.
Executed in 2011 in an edition of 80, this fine art print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist and remains in mint condition.
About this artist
Fred Tomaselli (American, b. 1956) is a contemporary artist renowned for his intricate, hallucinatory compositions that merge collage, painting, photography, and found imagery. Born in Santa Monica, California, Tomaselli has developed a highly distinctive visual language that layers fragments of popular culture, natural history, pharmaceuticals, and mass media into dense, luminous surfaces.
Since the 1990s, he has become particularly known for embedding unconventional materials—such as magazine cuttings, leaves, and prescription pills—into resin-coated panels, creating kaleidoscopic artworks that oscillate between beauty and unease. His practice often explores perception, altered states, and the psychological impact of contemporary visual culture.
In addition to his resin artworks, Tomaselli’s ongoing New York Times series has become a central aspect of his practice. By reworking front-page newspaper images through drawing, collage, and digital manipulation, he interrogates the authority of media imagery and the emotional undercurrents of political events. These works position him within a lineage of artists who critically engage with mass communication, while maintaining a deeply personal and visually immersive approach.
Tomaselli’s collages, paintings and limited edition prints have been exhibited internationally and are held in major museum collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Brooklyn Museum. Through both unique works and limited edition prints, Fred Tomaselli continues to examine how contemporary images shape collective consciousness and individual perception.
