Artwork details
Banksy’s Welcome Mat is a poignant edition produced for his Gross Domestic Product project in 2020. Hand-stitched from the fabric of life vests recovered from the shores of the Mediterranean, the mat spells out “Welcome” in vivid orange against a brown coir base.
Each piece was made in collaboration with the organization Love Welcomes, which works with refugee women, embedding themes of displacement, survival, and irony into the everyday object of a doormat. Both functional and symbolic, the artwork critiques global migration policies while transforming a humble household item into a politically charged statement.
About this artist
Banksy is an enigmatic and influential figure in contemporary art, renowned for his thought-provoking and often controversial artworks. Emerging from the Bristol underground scene in the 1990s, Banksy's practice is characterized by a distinctive stenciling technique that allows for rapid creation and replication across urban landscapes. His works frequently tackle social and political themes including war, consumerism, inequality, and migration, using humor and subversion to provoke thought and spark debate.
