About Selected Works
Antoni Tàpies was a leading figure in postwar European abstraction and one of the most influential Catalan artists of the 20th century. His practice spans painting, printmaking, and mixed-media works, defined by an intense focus on materiality, symbolism, and the physical surface of the artwork.
Tàpies developed a distinctive visual language using unconventional materials such as sand, marble dust, cloth, and found elements. His works often feature rough textures, earthy tones, and calligraphic signs, reflecting his engagement with Eastern philosophy, mysticism, and the human condition. Closely associated with Art Informel, he rejected formal perfection in favor of emotional depth and existential inquiry.
Alongside his paintings, Tàpies was an accomplished printmaker. His etchings, lithographs, and screenprints translate his tactile and symbolic approach into editioned works, combining gestural marks and abstract signs that invite contemplation. His works are held in major international museum collections and continue to be celebrated for their intellectual and material intensity.
