Zhang Xiaogang Biography

Zhang Xiaogang (張曉剛), born in 1958 in Kunming, is one of the most influential contemporary Chinese artists, internationally recognized for his emotionally charged paintings and prints that explore memory, identity, and collective history. Emerging in the wake of the Cultural Revolution, he became a leading figure of China’s avant-garde movement, shaping how Chinese contemporary art is perceived worldwide.

His most iconic body of work, the Bloodline: The Big Family series, draws inspiration from old family photographs. These haunting portraits, rendered in subdued monochromatic tones with dreamlike distortions, examine how personal and familial identities are shaped by broader political and social systems. His paintings and prints have since been exhibited at major institutions worldwide, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (2009), the Singapore Art Museum (2011), and the Daegu Art Museum, Korea (2014). Further solo retrospectives include Memory + Ingenuity at the Today Art Museum, Beijing (2006) and Bloodline: Zhang Xiaogang at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (2016).
