Yinka Shonibare (born 1962, London) is a celebrated British-Nigerian contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, photography, film, print, and installation. He is internationally renowned for elaborate staged scenes and figurative tableaux that explore cultural identity, colonial history, and the complex legacies of global trade.
Central to Shonibare’s visual language is the use of brightly colored Dutch wax fabric. Although widely associated with West African identity, the fabric itself reflects a global history: inspired by Indonesian batik, industrially produced by the Dutch, and later embraced across West Africa as a symbol of independence and cultural pride. By incorporating this material into his artworks, Shonibare reveals the contradictions embedded in ideas of authenticity, nationality, and cultural exchange.
Many of Shonibare’s most recognizable works present theatrical historical scenes populated by headless mannequins dressed in vibrant patterned textiles. These carefully constructed compositions combine humor, spectacle, and political critique, encouraging viewers to reconsider the cultural narratives that shape Western history and identity.
In addition to his sculptural installations, Yinka Shonibare has produced a significant body of limited edition prints and art editions. These signed editions translate the conceptual and visual language of his installations into collectible contemporary artworks, allowing collectors to engage with his exploration of history, identity, and globalization through accessible formats.
Due to a physical disability that affects one side of his body, Shonibare works closely with a team of assistants in the realization of his projects, making collaboration an integral element of his studio practice. This dynamic further reinforces the themes of authorship, production, and collective identity present throughout his work.
Today, Yinka Shonibare CBE RA is recognized as one of the most influential contemporary artists addressing the cultural entanglements of colonial history and globalization. His artworks are held in major museum collections worldwide, and his prints and editions remain highly sought after by collectors.
Auction record: US$325k, Sotheby’s, Miami, 2018.
