Dan Flavin (1933–1996) was a pioneering American artist and a central figure of Minimalism, best known for his radical use of commercially available fluorescent light as an artistic medium. Beginning in the early 1960s, Flavin transformed ordinary industrial light fixtures into immersive artworks, using a strictly limited vocabulary of colors and geometric arrangements to explore space, perception, and the physical presence of light. His installations dissolve traditional boundaries between artwork and environment, casting entire rooms in chromatic fields that redefine how viewers experience architecture and space.
Closely aligned with Minimalist contemporaries such as Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt, Flavin embraced industrial materials and serial structures to strip art of symbolism and narrative, focusing instead on direct sensory experience. After 1963, his practice consisted almost exclusively of light works, emphasizing repetition, restraint, and material specificity. Alongside his installations, Flavin also produced limited edition prints that echo the formal clarity of his light sculptures, employing simple geometric forms and subtle color shifts to translate his ideas into a two-dimensional medium.
Flavin’s installations and fine art prints have been the subject of major exhibitions and retrospectives at institutions including the National Gallery of Canada, Kunsthalle Basel, the St. Louis Art Museum, MOCA Los Angeles, the Deutsche Guggenheim, and Dia Foundation for the Arts.
