André Butzer is one of the most distinctive contemporary painters, known for expressive, color-driven works that fuse early European Expressionism with American popular culture. A self-described colorist, Butzer has developed a highly personal visual language built around recurring characters, signs, and rhythmic repetition, informed by influences ranging from Edvard Munch and Willem de Kooning to Philip Guston, Jean Dubuffet, and Walt Disney.
Working in a style he terms “Science Fiction Expressionism,” his practice has evolved from large-scale, chromatically intense figurative paintings toward more reduced, black-and-white abstract compositions, while maintaining a consistent conceptual framework. His graphic vocabulary translates particularly well into prints and etchings, where line, color, and repetition become central structural elements. Born in Stuttgart in 1973, he lives and works in Altadena, California.
