Artwork details
Günter Fruhtrunk’s Zwischen Grün (Between Green) is a signed screenprint on cardboard published as part of the portfolio “spiegel 70”, issued in Cologne in 1970. The portfolio brought together thirteen prints by leading international artists, including Jean Arp, Christo, Max Ernst, and Victor Vasarely, situating Fruhtrunk within a broader dialogue of postwar European abstraction.
In Zwischen Grün, Fruhtrunk deploys his characteristic system of precisely calibrated vertical bands. Alternating red and black stripes dominate the composition, punctuated by green at the margins. The rhythmic sequencing of color creates optical tension and spatial vibration, reflecting his rigorous investigation of geometry, movement, and chromatic contrast. As in much of his work of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the composition balances mathematical structure with perceptual dynamism.
Published in an edition of 150, this abstract print is hand-signed, numbered, and dated in pencil on the verso. The sheet measures 62 × 83 cm, and stands as a strong example of Fruhtrunk’s contribution to European geometric abstraction and postwar printmaking.
About this artist
Günter Fruhtrunk (1923–1982) occupies a central position in postwar geometric abstraction. Born in Munich, he began painting during World War II, initially working in watercolor before turning decisively toward non-figurative art. His move to Paris proved formative: studying with Fernand Léger and encountering the work of Jean Arp, Fruhtrunk refined a rigorous visual language rooted in structure, rhythm, and chromatic tension.
Fruhtrunk is best known for his dynamic compositions of diagonal bands and precisely calibrated color contrasts. His paintings explore optical vibration and spatial instability through strict geometric order, aligning him with Concrete art and the broader European tradition of constructive abstraction. Repetition, symmetry, and sharp-edged forms generate a sense of movement while maintaining formal discipline.
Printmaking played a crucial role in his practice. Through lithography, etching, and serigraphy, Fruhtrunk translated his geometric vocabulary into limited edition prints with exceptional clarity and precision. These works on paper extend the same structural rigor found in his paintings, making his abstract compositions accessible to collectors while preserving their conceptual intensity.
Fruhtrunk achieved international recognition during his lifetime, participating in documenta 4 and the Venice Biennale in 1968. His work has been presented in major institutional exhibitions, including the Neue Nationalgalerie, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Kunstmuseum Bonn, and Lenbachhaus. Fruhtrunk remains a key figure in the history of European geometric abstraction, and his limited edition prints continue to be highly sought after by collectors of museum-quality contemporary art.
