Laure Prouvost is a French contemporary artist, known for her mesmerizing installations, films and prints. Especially with her extensive multimedia environments, the Turner Prize winner creates an interplay between image, language and meaning. Provoust takes joy in confounding linear narratives and expected associations. Aiming at transporting viewers into other worlds, her work reveals fragments of a known reality that is being re-contextualized and imaginatively distorted. Laure Prouvost joyfully explores the entanglements of personal memories and fictional truths, inviting the viewer to question their perception of what is real and what is not. In addition to her art’s dreamlike nature, her work is also sharply activist: emancipation, globalization and climate change are reappearing themes in her oeuvre. Laure Prouvost‘s videos are often shown within immersive environments which comprise found objects, sculptures, painting and drawings, signs, furniture and architectural assemblages, based on the installation’s overarching narrative. She was awarded the Turner Prize in 2013 and represented France at the 58th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennial in 2019. Prouvost has held solo exhibitions at institution including Bonnefanten Museum (Maastricht), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Kunstmuseum Luzern, Haus Der Kunst (Munich), New Museum (New York), Whitechapel Gallery (London) and Tate Britain (London) amongst others. Born in 1978 in Croix-Lille, Laure Prouvost lives and works between Antwerp, Belgium, and London, United Kingdom.
