Art cannot live outside the human body. – David Shrigley

David Shrigley is an artist and illustrator, best known for his humorous cartoons. His flat, child-like compositions deal with the disquieting elements of everyday life and offer observations on the world. While drawing is at the centre of his practice, the artist also works across an extensive range of media including sculpture, large-scale installation, animation, painting, photography and music. David Shrigley works actively to try and appeal to audiences outside the gallery. One of the artist’s most notable recent works was a sculpture that was created on the basis of his drawings. ‘Really Good’ was a larger than life, elongated thumb that was installed on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth from September 2016 to March 2018. It formed part of his wider practice of playing with the scale of objects and giving them curious proportions. Of the sculpture, Shrigley said: “I made a drawing of an elongated thing that said everything is good.” David Shrigley has also recently started working in filmmaking. His work can be found in renowned public collection, including the MoMA in New York, Tate in London, Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2013, Shrigley was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize for his exhibition David Shrigley: Brain Activity at the Hayward Gallery in London. He was born 1968 in Macclessfield, UK, and currently lives in Brighton.
