Brice Marden, Etching for Obama

Brice Marden is an American abstract painter who is best known for his minimalist, monochromatic paintings that explore the relationship between color, form, and space. Born in 1938 in Bronxville, New York, Marden studied at Boston University and Yale University before moving to New York City in the early 1960s. Brice Marden‘s early works were characterized by their spare, geometric forms and muted color palettes. However, in the late 1960s, he began to incorporate more organic shapes and brighter colors into his paintings, creating works that were more fluid and expressive. One of Marden’s most famous series of paintings is titled the Cold Mountain Series. Created in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the series consists of large-scale canvases that are painted in a palette of earthy greens, blues, and browns. The paintings are named after a classic Chinese text, and Marden has described them as “journeys” or “maps” that explore the relationship between nature and spirituality. In addition to painting, Brice Marden has also worked extensively in printmaking since the early 1970s. Marden’s print works are characterized by their delicate lines and subtle color variations, which create a sense of depth and texture on the page. Throughout his career, Marden has been recognized for his contributions to the art world. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts by the United States government in 2009 and has been the subject of numerous major exhibitions at leading institutions around the world.
