Donald Sultan is an American painter, printmaker and sculptor, best known for abstracted, geometric black forms, set against organic areas of bright color. While primarily regarded as a still-lifes, Sultan maintains that his art is first and foremost abstract. Exploring such dichotomies as abstraction and representation, nature and artificiality, and beauty and roughness, his large-scale paintings and prints characteristically employ industrial materials. The use of roofing tar, enamel, linoleum and spackle stands in stark contrast to Donald Sultan‘s fragile, natural subject matter of fruits and flowers. His art is included in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Tate Gallery in London. Donald Sultan was born in Asheville, NC in 1951.
