JR is a pseudonymous French artist, working at the intersection of photography, film-making and social engagement. Alongside Banksy, Invader and Shepard Fairey, he is regarded as one of the world’s most important street artists. JR is particularly well known for his large-scale urban interventions and monumental photographic collages. By overlaying gigantic black-and-white photographs on public spaces, he makes the invisible – people, usually, the poor, the marginalised, the forgotten – visible. Over the past two decades, JR has organized a myriad of site-specific interventions all over the world: from the Brazilian favelas, to the walls in the Middle East or the US-Mexican border. In treating his artworks as social projects, he typically collaborates with local communities by taking individual portraits, reproducing them at a monumental scale, and installing them in nearby public spaces. Understanding the streets as “the largest art gallery in the world”, JR seeks to transport his socially critical yet joyful art to audiences who do not typically visit galleries and museums. His artworks are included in major public collections, such as The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum, the Château La Coste, Aix-en- Provence and the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne. JR was born in Paris, France in 1983.
