Gert & Uwe Tobias Prints

Gert & Uwe Tobias are Romanian born twins, and a collaborative duo of visual artists. Together they create woodcuts, sculptures, collages, and drawings which are influenced by their Eastern European heritage.  As well drawing inspiration from Romanian folklore, Gert & Uwe Tobias are also inspired by Communist era art and German post-war paintings. The result is their signature fantastical imagery. The large-scale woodcuts for which they are best known are a continuation of modernist geometric abstraction and use line, colour, shape, and typography fused with visual tradition of folk art. In many of their works the artists use a variety of media such as woodblock printing, watercolour, typewriters, and ceramics to create a multi-layered effect on the work’s surface. In doing so they explore the interaction between popular culture and various myths associated with their homeland. Gert & Uwe Tobias combine love of their native history with elements of contemporary graphic design and abstract art to create works that blurs the line between fine art and craft, whilst employing a range of traditional and contemporary art practices.
