The artwork was published as a fundraising edition for the National Portrait Gallery in London.

A woman looks straight out of the sheet, drawn in loose, fluid lines of blue ink. One eye is shaded much more darkly than the other, and her head and bare chest sit between the arms of a chair. The lines of the chair are as light as those of the figure, and the paper is left untouched around her. The drawing keeps the speed and directness of a sketch, which is typical of Emin’s work, where emotional exposure and vulnerability run through her drawings, paintings, neon works and prints.

The signed print is one of four that relate to the bronze relief portraits Tracey Emin made for the new 4 metre high front doors of the National Portrait Gallery, which reopened in 2023. The doors carry 45 portraits of women, drawn first in blue ink. Emin has said that they are meant to represent “every woman, every age and every culture throughout time”, and that she used herself as a mental template. This edition carries that drawing from the doors onto paper.
