Daniel Richter has influenced painting in Germany since the 1990s as few others have. Choosing classical oil painting as his medium, Richter draws on contemporary imagery sourced from mass media, popular culture or art history. The representation of artificial light, flashlight, thermal image or X-ray enable him to subversively comment on current events, whilst evoking an atmosphere of artificiality and nervosity. Stemming from the anarchic movement himself, the theme of total surveillance has been a recurring motif in Daniel Richter‘s œuvre – the association with infra-red and thermal imaging cameras is unavoidable, revealing a paranoid view. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the National Gallery of Canada, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Essl Museum in Vienna, Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum, and the Saatchi Gallery. German, born 1962 in Lütjenburg, Germany.
